Atebubu-Amantin Watch

Atebubu GPRTU pleads for road repair after fare increment hijack.

The recent increase in transportation fare from Atebubu to Techiman, from ¢61 to ¢70, has caused a stir among drivers and passengers alike. However, after a meeting between the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon Ayarba Thomas and the Union of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Atebubu branch on August 11, 2025; the decision to withdraw the increment was made.

During the meeting, the Union pleaded with the government to reconstruct or repair the Atebubu to Kumasi road, which is in dire need of attention. They also requested that spare parts dealers reduce their prices to make it more affordable for drivers to maintain their vehicles.

Furthermore, the Union urged the government to maintain the prices of fuel, as the cost has been steadily increasing. They pointed out that when the government initially asked drivers to reduce transportation fares, the price of fuel was ¢10 per litre. However, it has since risen to ¢11.99 and above per litre , making it difficult for drivers to operate at a lower fare.

The drivers expressed their frustration with how some media houses in Ghana, particularly in Atebubu, handle issues related to transportation fares and fuel hikes. They feel unfairly targeted and pressured to reduce fares, while other businesses are allowed to set prices based on their own calculations.

The chairman of Atebubu GPRTU highlighted that tractor, VIP drivers and Prague riders are still charging fares as they please, without facing the same scrutiny as regular drivers. This disparity in treatment has left drivers feeling marginalized and frustrated.

It is clear that the transportation industry in Atebubu is facing challenges that need to be addressed by both the government and other stakeholders. By working together to improve road infrastructure, reduce spare parts costs, and maintain fuel prices, the industry can operate more efficiently and fairly for all involved.
