Week ago today, Devastating Fire Engulfed Part of Atebubu Market.

A week ago today, a devastating fire engulfed a part of Atebubu Market around 3am, resulting in the destruction of about 100 stores belonging to market women and other properties. The cause of the fire outbreak is still unknown, but there are rumors that leftover pieces of fire may have been the trigger for the destruction.
In the wake of such incidents, residents had hoped that the Atebubu Fire Service branch of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) would have taken proactive measures to prevent such a disaster. However, it was discovered that the fire tender was not functioning, exacerbating the situation. In a desperate attempt to contain the fire, residents had to volunteer their water vehicles, tractors, and other equipment.

The question now arises: who is responsible for repairing and maintaining the fire tender? The authorities have been engaged in a blame-shifting exercise since the incident, with no concrete plans in place to prevent or mitigate such disasters in the future.
Furthermore, there has been a lack of clarity on proposed aid or support for the victims from the Traditional Council, Market Authority, and Municipal Assembly. While the Traditional Council has reportedly initiated discussions with relevant bodies to investigate the cause of the fire and address the situation, formal announcements or actions have yet to be taken.

It is imperative that the authorities come together to address the root causes of such incidents and put in place measures to prevent future occurrences. The safety and well-being of the residents should be a top priority, and it is essential that all stakeholders work together to ensure the protection of lives and properties in Atebubu Market and beyond.
